Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) has upgraded to the latest 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, marking a significant step forward in diagnostic imaging for children across Western Australia.

Supported by a $2.5 million investment through the Medical Equipment and Imaging Replacement Program, the upgraded system was installed and commissioned seamlessly, going live on 3 June 2026.

The first patient was scanned on the same morning, signalling the start of a new era for MRI services at PCH.

Chief Medical Imaging Technologist Craig Sherratt said the upgrade will deliver major benefits for both patients and clinicians.

“This upgrade delivers substantial potential in producing clearer images with significant improvements in scan times,” Mr Sherratt said.

“It will support more accurate diagnosis, improved patient outcomes and better access to care, while also enhancing safety, reliability and alignment with current clinical standards.”

The benefits are already being experienced by patients like 7-year-old Vinnique, one of the first children to use the new MRI.

Ahead of his scan, Vinnique helped his toy giraffe take a turn through the hospital’s “Mini Tom Kids” miniature MRI – a child-friendly, hands-on experience designed to build confidence and reduce anxiety.

The new MRI suite has been carefully designed with children and families in mind.

In addition to faster scan times and improved image quality, the space features an enhanced cinematic environment to help create a calmer, more comfortable experience for young patients.

The upgraded technology not only improves the patient experience but also strengthens the hospital’s ability to provide high-quality, safe and reliable care.

By delivering clearer images more efficiently, the new 3T MRI will support clinicians to make faster, more accurate diagnoses, ultimately improving outcomes for children across the state.

This investment ensures Perth Children’s Hospital remains at the forefront of paediatric healthcare, continuing to meet the evolving needs of Western Australian families.
